From green hydrogen to electrification: “Blue Supply Chains” roadmaps highlighted at BPO conferences

Sep 8, 2025

The recently developed two roadmaps in the Baltic Sea region outline concrete steps towards climate-neutral port operations and sustainable maritime transport. They provide actionable pathways for ports, municipalities, and industry stakeholders to accelerate the transition to renewable fuels, electrification, and other low-emission solutions. Both projects will be briefly presented at two upcoming conferences organised by the Baltic Ports Organization.

These strategic documents, created within the framework of the EU-funded Interreg Baltic Sea Region project “Blue Supply Chains”, serve as practical guidance on how to plan, implement, and scale green energy and zero-emission solutions in and around ports. They cover the entire value chain – from production sites, storage, and bunkering facilities to infrastructure requirements, policy frameworks, and stakeholder involvement, including both alternative fuel production and the electrification of inland waterway transport. The Baltic Ports Organization is one of the BSC project partners.

Sweden: towards a climate-neutral port by 2040
The Umeå roadmap envisions large-scale electrofuel production using green hydrogen and expanded onshore power supply, with shipping companies like Wasaline and SCA expected to transition to renewable fuels. By 2040, the region aims to supply around 110,000 tonnes of electro-methanol annually, supporting both local use and export.

Lithuania: green transport on inland waterways
In Lithuania, the roadmap explores the Klaipėda-Kaunas corridor, focusing on low-emission inland shipping with electric pushers and barges. The plan highlights inland waterways as a viable alternative to road transport, easing congestion and reducing CO₂ while strengthening multimodal logistics chains.

Blue Supply Chains – the framework behind the roadmaps
The roadmaps are a key output of the Blue Supply Chains (BSC) project which unites 20 partners from 8 countries to support zero-emission port operations and sustainable multimodal transport across the Baltic Sea Region. Its focus areas include the electrification of port equipment, fossil-free bunkering, charging infrastructure, and the development of green logistics corridors. By combining strategic planning tools, such as the roadmaps, with pilot activities and cross-border cooperation, the Blue Supply Chains project provides guidance and practical approaches for ports and municipalities to implement low-emission solutions.

BSC and roadmaps at two industry conferences
To promote knowledge sharing and practical implementation, the BSC project and its roadmaps will be showcased at upcoming two conferences in Poland organised by the Baltic Ports Organization.
At the BPO annual event, Baltic Ports Conference, held this year in Gdańsk, one of the sessions will feature a presentation on how the Blue Supply Chains project supports port authorities and operators in decarbonising port operations.

Additionally, at the Baltic Ports for Climate Conference, hosted in Gdynia, a dedicated session will focus on insights from the project, including keynote speeches, a panel discussion, and opportunities for networking and site visits.
